I am absolutely against traffic offenders, who create huge risks for themselves and other drivers and pedestrians by speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing seatbelts, going through red lights and illegal use of mobile phones etcetera. I resolutely donot agree with the creation of an EU wide criminal law, which would allow the exchange of car registration details to track down drivers who have committed offences in another EU country. This new directive aims to improve road safety and make all offenders equal before the law, but at the same time it forges a harmonisation of traffic rules at the EU level. Many elements of road safety policy in the UK have been regarded as cash cows. If the UK take ownership of such legislation it will not be long before they insist on collecting fines from drivers. There are also very different rules through the EU on road safety. In the UK we have some of the lowest incident of accidents. It is another policy area where the EU should not be permitted to act
