Welsh MEP supports biker protest against EU regulations
MEP for Wales John Bufton has pledged support to motorcyclists in Wales aggrieved by a proposed inundation of EU laws.
Motorcyclists from around the UK will meet up on Sunday to embark upon coordinated 20 minute protest rides along motorways around Britain, all kicking off at 1pm from service stations across the country.
To demonstrate solidarity with the cause, UKIP MEP John Bufton will be at Sarn Services on Junction 36 of the M4 on Sunday 25th September to cheer on riders as they take to the motorways.
“Brussels already has a raft of extremely restrictive and damaging regulation against car users and commercial drivers, so it’s not surprising the EU now wishes to target motorcyclists,” said the MEP.
“The proposed regulations will demand compulsory ABS and limit tyre dimensions, which will also be carried through to repair and resale and have a massive impact upon the industry as a whole. Spot checks and inspections will hamper riders while insurance companies will seek to profit from regulations using proposals such as laws to force all riders and pillions to wear day-glo clothing to hike up premiums.
“The legislation will disproportionately punish motorcyclists who take to the roads with necessary caution and also cost manufacturers, mechanics and traders, as well as riders, a fortune.
“Worse still, there are proposals to develop technology to remotely control throttles to fix motorbike speeds along certain stretches of road. I have never heard of anything as extreme or intrusive as authorities actually seizing control of a vehicle as it travels.
“Many motorcyclists are already unfairly judged and the EU’s attitude appears to further demonise them. The result will be a huge and unfair impact on the motorcycle industry.”
